Information and interesting connections about this cover.
It was written by fellow-Manc Ewan MacColl for his own wife Peggy Seeger in 1958.
Ewan MacColl also wrote "Dirty Old Town"-a pretty good description of Manchester at the time and also the "Manchester Rambler" after the mass trespass of the then private land in the Peak District overlooking Manchester which at the time was inaccessible to ordinary people and which led to the opening up of the Peak District to the general public and the eventual formation the Peak District National Park in 1951
Ewan MacColl was also the father of the late Kirsty MacColl, best known for her duet "Fairytale of New York" with Shane McGowan.
Peggy Seeger, for whom the song was written, is the daughter of the father of American Folk, Pete Seeger who wrote, among other things, "Where Have all the Flowers Gone" and "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "If I had a Hammer."
My version is based on the acoustic one by Peter, Paul and Mary, which I think, is a bit closer to the original. The most famous version however is probably the one by Roberta Flack.
