El tercer álbum de estudio de Houston, I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990), produjo dos sencillos número uno en Billboard Hot 100: la canción principal y «All the Man That I Need».
Houston pasó a protagonizar y grabar bandas sonoras para Waiting to Exhale (1995) y The Preacher's Wife (1996).
El primer álbum de estudio de Houston en ocho años, My Love Is Your Love (1998), generó varios sencillos exitosos, incluida la canción principal, «Heartbreak Hotel» y «It's Not Right but It's Okay».
